Workshop Report | What Now Since The State Capture Commission?
On 15 November 2024, PARI and CASAC jointly held a workshop for deliberation and feedback on the priority issues from the Zondo Commission that civil society needs to watch. This report documents the main arguments put forward by a lineup of speakers, including the former Chief Evidence Leader at the Zondo Commission, the Public Protector and a representative from The Presidency, among others. The workshop was well attended at the University of Johannesburg and online.
About the Workshop
More than two years ago, the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of State Capture (Zondo Commission) completed its work. In October 2022, the President presented his response to the Commission’s findings to Parliament, and by November, the National Assembly adopted an implementation plan to address the recommendations in the State
Capture Report.
It is essential to keep the momentum generated by the Zondo Commission alive as a platform for accountability. The Commission’s findings provided critical evidence of state capture and detailed the mechanisms by which it was organised and pursued. The report laid out key recommendations, not only for holding those responsible accountable, but also for institutional and regulatory reforms to prevent similar
occurrences in the future.
To maintain a focus on the Commission’s work, on 15 November 2024, the Council for the Advancement of the Constitution (CASAC) and the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) hosted a workshop entitled, What Now Since the State Capture Commission? Deliberation and feedback on the priority issues from the Zondo Commission that civil society needs to watch’. The workshop was held at the University of Johannesburg and online.
This was the third event on the Commission hosted by CASAC and PARI. In September 2022, we hosted a conference to assess these findings and recommendations. Find the 2022 report here. A follow-up conference in 2023 focused on the responses from Parliament, the Executive and the corporate sector. A summary of the 2023 conference is available here. The event brought together civil society, academia, government, business and media, generating valuable debate and recommendations to further combat state capture.
