In late 2024, CASAC commissioned research from Oxford ProBono Publico on the governance of the judiciary from comparative jurisdictions. The paper will inform the development of CASAC’s own position on an appropriate model for placing the administration of the South African courts within the control of the judiciary in line with previous recommendations by committees led by the late Chief Justices Arthur Chaskalson and Pius Langa. Such a model would ensure the judiciary’s full institutional independence and reaffirm the separation of powers.
