The Council notes the outcome of the national and provincial elections held on 29 May 2024. The Council also wishes to commend the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) for conducting the elections with minimal disruption.
While the tallying of votes being finalised, the Council encourages all political parties and independent candidates with objections to any part of the electoral process to utilise the available avenues and await the resolution of those objections and complaints through the IEC’s formal processes and to refrain from questioning the IEC’s integrity.

The Council notes further that no party will secure an outright majority to form a government on its own, necessitating the formation of a national coalition government. As political parties chart a way forward, the Council wishes to stress the importance of centering any coalition negotiations around the constitutional framework. Parties must be mindful to construct such arrangements in a manner that safeguards our commitment to freedom, equality and the achievement of human rights, and in fulfilment of the obligation to have an open, responsive and transparent government. The Constitution has provided the necessary institutional stability for our democracy over the last 30 years and should likewise play a central role in our new reality. The Council remains confident that political parties are committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law and will continue to do so after the final results are declared, and coalition negotiations commence.
