CASAC MOURNS THE PASSING OF JUSTICE YVONNE MOKGORO

CASAC joins millions of South Africans in mourning the tragic passing of former Constitutional Court Justice and honorary member of the CASAC Advisory Council Yvonne Mokgoro on 9 May 2024. Justice Mokgoro was a pioneer in many ways, becoming one of the first members of the Constitutional Court and the first black woman to be appointed to that court. She
together with Justice Kate O’Regan were also the first academics to be appointed to that court. Justice Mokgoro is rightly credited with infusing into our law the African moral principle of Ubuntu, which was her guiding light in dispensing justice as a judge of the Constitutional Court. Her contribution to the development of the law and the administration of justice is undeniable and will endure for future generations. She will be remembered not only for her formidable intellect and moral fortitude, but also for her warmth, kindness, and generosity. Her presence changed many lives, and her absence will be sorely felt. May she rest in peace.
